CHAPTER TEN

Seth tossed his cap on the bar and divested his uniform of cell phone, police radio, pistol, belt, badge and wallet on his way to change into civilian clothes. For several days he’d taken life easier, and his back felt better. Not good but better. He could get some work done over at the ranger’s house tonight.

Alicia had gone to a youth group get-together at church and wouldn’t be home until late. He missed the little monkey when she wasn’t around. They’d had lunch together earlier that day and she’d hung out with him, making rounds on the lake until the dreaded boredom struck.

Smiling, he pulled a pair of faded jeans from the closet along with an old T-shirt that wouldn’t mind being slathered with paint. His princess was growing up, and from what he’d observed she seemed to be doing all right. He worried about her a lot, prayed about her all the time. A daughter was a frightening thing to a single man.

The smile faded away. He didn’t much like being single but that seemed to be God’s will for his life. He and the Lord had had a number of conversations, mostly one-sided, about this very topic until Seth had finally stopped arguing the point. But he couldn’t say he understood.

He shook his head in self-derision.

The other day he’d all but preached to Kat about the importance of finding God’s plan instead of our own. And now he was complaining because he didn’t like the direction his own life seemed to be headed.

Regardless of his single status, he was a blessed man. Life was good. He loved his job, had a great church and a number of good friends. He could fish most anytime he wanted, and the view from Kat’s cabin would make any country boy drool.

He sat down on the side of the bed and toed off his boots.

This was Kat’s house. Maybe that’s why he thought about her all the time. He could feel her personality in the choice of deep, comfortable furniture, in the rich, autumn colors splashed here and there, in the warm polished pine of cabinets and trim. She thought she had no gift for decorating, but he knew better.

“Kat,” he muttered to the Native-American-influenced rug beneath his feet.

What was he going to do about Kat? About the feelings that grew every time they were together?

Nothing, said a little voice in his head.

There was nothing he could do except pray, and he’d done plenty of that. The Lord was probably tired of listening.

His belly growled, a reminder that he should eat something before heading to the ranger’s house. A big, juicy burger sounded pretty good.

He stood and stretched his back. A twinge here and there reminded him that he would have to go easy tonight.

In sock feet, he padded through the living room and into the kitchen. A man could stand in this sun-washed room with its wall of windows and stare at the lake forever.

He was putting hamburger meat in the microwave to thaw when someone knocked.
